Lago di Braies, which is also known as Lake Prags or Pragser Wildsee is one of the largest lakes in Dolomites, Northern Italy, and arguably one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
I’m not gonna lie, I first found out about this amazing lake from none other than Instagram, where it was featured all over my Explore page for a period of time. Blue-green waters, cute boats, peace and calm was I felt about it from the pictures. And that’s how it was also in real life.
Lago di Braies is a part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. This also means that it’s a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Being situated at aprox 1500m above sea level, the lake is also the deepest in the Dolomites, with 36m of depth.
The best time to visit Lake Prags taking into consideration weather and also number of visitors is April-May or September-October. Even then, you might want to start early in the morning as after 10am you will be crowded by tourists. Even if you can’t visit in these time frames, winter is perfect for breathtaking views of the mountains covered in snow.
What to do at Lago di Braies
Popular among photographers, Lago di Braies features activities for adventure seekers too. One of the most popular activities at the lake is hiking around it, as a trekking loop is available for everyone with good walking shoes. Taking aprox an hour, the hike is quite a simple one, with only a few stairs to climb. The land is not that smooth though so the trekking shoes might not be to ignore. If your into picnics, there are some spots perfect for it along the way.
Another great activity is renting a boat and row around the crystal clear waters. There is only one boat rental at your disposal, but make sure it is open when you go. When we paid a visit it was closed due to filming of a tv show. In the normal situations renting a boat is available from June to September, from 10am to 5pm, costing 15euro/30min or 25euro/1h.
If you are a swimmer, you are allowed to swim at Lago di Braies. But you must be into cold water too, as it will be freezing. Due to the altitude the lake is located, you will not find warm water for swimming, not even in the summer days. But, of course, you can try 🙂
Near the shores of the lake, a small chapel can be seen, Chapel ‘Lago di Braies’. The little one is actually full of history as it played a role in the last days of the World War II. An exchange of prisoners took place near the lake between Germany and SS, and the first thing that the liberated prisoners did was to go pray at that chapel.
Can you find accommodation near the lake? Yes, Hotel ‘Lago di Braies’ is the closest one, but it is quite expensive.
Can you find places to eat near the lake? Yes, there are a few options: the restaurant at hotel ‘Lago di Braies’, a bar that offers some sandwiches near the restaurant I mentioned and also a Bar&Grill. Only know that some of them might be closing after 5pm.
Is there a parking near the lake? Yes, it will cost around 6 euros for aprox 3 hours during the day. If you come before 7am or after 5pm might be even cheaper.
Worthy or not, it depends on you.
